IPL Q & A

What is IPL?

Intense pulsed light (IPL) is a noninvasive procedure that uses light therapy to target and destroy dark pigmentation. It’s used to treat a variety of skin issues, including:

  • Sun damage
  • Age spots
  • Acne
  • Rosacea
  • Fine lines and wrinkles

Sometimes referred to as photo rejuvenation, IPL can be used to improve skin’s texture and appearance, giving it a smooth, youthful glow.

This innovative procedure can treat a variety of areas, including your:

  • Face
  • Neck
  • Decollete
  • Chest
  • Hands

How does IPL work?

Dr. Saal uses state-of-the-art equipment to send energized light deep into your skin. These light wavelengths specifically target pigmentation, breaking it up and allowing the body to remove these discolorations.

Unlike traditional laser therapy, IPL uses a soft light with ample coverage. That lowers your risk of skin and tissue damage.

IPL treatments are noninvasive and require no downtime. As soon as Dr. Saal completes the procedure, you’re free to return to your day-to-day activities.

Although the treatment typically has no discomfort, some patients experience a slight reddening of their skin, similar to a mild sunburn.

What happens after an IPL treatment?

After Dr. Saal completes the treatment, your treatment area may be red or slightly sore. If you have dark pigmentation, these areas may darken during the first few days after the procedure.

Don’t worry, this is normal. After a few days, these spots begin to lighten, with optimal effects seen within 2-4 weeks.

How many IPL treatments do you need?

Your treatment goals and the condition of your skin determine the number of IPL treatments you need.

Dr. Saal typically recommends multiple treatment sessions to give you the best outcomes possible. Most patients find optimal results between 3-6 treatment sessions, completed 3-4 weeks apart.

Are IPL treatments right for you?

If you’re looking for a way to rid yourself of dark pigmentation or just rejuvenate your skin’s appearance, IPL treatments may be right for you. Because these light waves are absorbed into pigmentations, those with fair skin tones may have better results. Even so, darker skin tones may still benefit from IPL treatments.
