What is BOTOX?
BOTOX is a FDA-approved prescription medication that reduces the appearance of:
- Crow’s feet
- Fine lines
- Wrinkles
- Forehead creases
- Glabellar lines (the “11” frown lines between the eyebrows)
It’s a popular minimally invasive, anti-aging treatment that smooths lines and creases on the face, restoring a more youthful appearance. It’s safe and effective for most people.

How does BOTOX work?
When Dr. Saal administers a BOTOX treatment, he injects a small amount of purified botulinum toxin into specific facial muscles. Doing so paralyzes these muscles, stopping them from contracting. These muscle contractions are what create the creases in your skin and, after years of repetitive motion, lead to expression lines and wrinkles.
With the muscles paralyzed, movement ceases, and the appearance of these wrinkles diminishes over time. The effects of each BOTOX treatment last up to four months.
What should you expect during a BOTOX treatment?
Before administering BOTOX injections, Dr. Saal may have you make exaggerated facial movements, allowing him to determine where to apply the dosage. After marking these areas, he gives you multiple injections.
In about 10 minutes, the procedure is over, and you’re free to go back to your regular day-to-day activities. BOTOX treatments require no downtime; you can can even do it on your lunch break.
Is BOTOX painful?
Most patients experience only minor discomfort during a BOTOX treatment, saying it feels like a pinprick. If you’re concerned about pain during the procedure, speak to Dr. Saal. He may apply a numbing solution before administering the injections.
Although rare, some patients experience side effects for the first 24 hours after treatment, including:
- Swelling
- Headache
- Tiredness
- Dry mouth
- Blurred vision
