Treating Your Acne Scars with Juvéderm® XC Injectables

You struggled with acne outbreaks when you were younger, but instead of staying in the past, where they belong, these unfortunate developments linger on in the form of acne scarring.

To help you put the past firmly in the past, Dr. Bruce Saal and our team of highly skilled nurses here at Los Gatos Dermatology offer Juvéderm XC injections, which can make quick work of acne scarring.

How acne scarring occurs

Whether you had a terrible time with inflammatory acne that covered your face or just a few large pimples, there’s potential for acne scarring. To put some numbers to the problem, about 80% of people ages 11-30 get acne and one in five develop scarring.

In most cases, acne scarring affects those who dealt with inflammatory acne, in which acne cysts and nodules formed. This type of acne goes deeper into your tissues and can cause damage that goes below the surface of your skin.

In response, your body floods the area with collagen to maintain your skin’s strength, and this collagen is tougher than your natural skin. If you lost tissue due to your acne, the scarring is typically indented (pockmarks).

If your acne affected only the surface of your skin, the collagen may cause a raised bump to form. This is especially true if you picked at the pimple, which may have led to more tissue damage and subsequent collagen production.

Another problem that you may encounter is that, due to the natural loss of collagen as you age, indented acne scarring can become more prominent as surrounding skin loses volume and sags.

The end result is that acne scarring that didn’t bother you before becomes a cosmetic concern.

Filling in the voids

If your acne scarring is indented, we’ve found that the dermal filler Juvéderm XC does a great job in filling in the area and smoothing out your skin. This injectable contains hyaluronic acid, which is a naturally occurring substance in your body that retains moisture.

With Juvéderm, we can tackle acne scarring most anywhere it develops, and your results can last up to a year, though these results vary from one client to the next.

Another benefit of Juvéderm injectables is that we can deliver immediate results in just minutes.

Acne scarring of a different kind

While Juvéderm XC does a great job with pockmarks left behind by acne, if your scarring is raised or you have a considerable number of indentations, we may recommend other acne scarring treatments, including:
