Incorporating Botox Into Your Regular Beauty Routine

More women have Botox® than any other minimally invasive procedure in the United States. And there’s a good reason for that. Botox, which is short for botulinum toxin, is a simple and quick procedure with minimal side effects that can take years off your appearance, without surgery or downtime.

Botox Cosmetic was the first drugmaker to use botulinum toxin. Other types of botulinum toxin include Dysport® and Xeomin®.  Each works a little differently, so it’s important to discuss your beauty goals with us so we can help you figure out the best product for you.

Like facials, face creams, cleansers, and sunscreen, adding regular Botox treatment can help your skin look its best and help you look years younger than your actual age. Here’s some information about Botox that we at Los Gatos Dermatology think you should know before having the injections.

How Botox helps you look younger

Fine lines and wrinkles are inevitable with age. No matter how well you take care of your skin or stay out of the sun, your skin eventually loses its battle with time. Fine lines creep up around your eyes, and creases settle in on your forehead and between your eyebrows.

Botox helps you eliminate and soften these signs of aging without doing anything drastic. The result? A more attractive and youthful appearance that makes you happy when you look in the mirror.

Botox is an FDA-approved temporary muscle relaxant. Once injected, it paralyzes muscles in your face and prevents them from contracting and forming lines and creases in your skin. It takes about three to seven weeks for the full effects of the treatment to appear after your procedure.

Results last about four months, although it can vary from person to person.

What to expect at your Botox appointment

Dr. Bruce Saal discusses your goals and your concerns about your appearance before he proceeds. Following your consultation, he makes microinjections of Botox into the appropriate facial muscles. The entire treatment session lasts less than 15 minutes. There’s no downtime, and you can return to work or your daily activities immediately following your appointment.

It’s relatively painless, although you may feel a little pinch as the Botox is injected. Side effects are minimal but include redness or soreness at the injection site, swelling, tiredness, and a headache. But most people don’t experience any side effects and those who do find they dissipate quickly.  It’s important to choose an experienced board-certified cosmetic dermatologist like Dr. Saal for the best and safest outcomes.
